Objective

The Soil Health Card (SHC) Scheme aims to furnish every cultivator with a scientifically validated assessment of soil nutrient composition, enabling precise amendment of chemical and organic inputs to sustain productivity and soil fertility.

Operational Framework

State agricultural departments, through designated Soil Testing Laboratories, collect representative soil samples from each farmer's field. Samples are analysed for macro‑ and micronutrients, pH, organic carbon and salinity. The analytical outcomes are codified into a Soil Health Card that enumerates the current nutrient status and prescribes the quantity of fertilizers (both inorganic and organic) required per hectare for the upcoming cropping season.

Implementation Cycle

Cards are issued biennially, with provisions for re‑testing in case of significant agronomic changes. The scheme is financed jointly by the Union Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare and State Governments, ensuring uniform service delivery across all districts.

1. The farmer approaches the nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra or Block Agricultural Officer.
2. The officer collects soil samples from the field as per prescribed protocol.
3. Samples are dispatched to an accredited Soil Testing Laboratory.
4. Laboratory analysis is completed within 15‑20 days.
5. The Soil Health Card is printed and handed to the farmer, accompanied by a briefing on recommended fertilizer dosages.
